“I think any race finished is an achievement in itself.”

Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

I am Vagn Kirkelund, 55 years old and come from Denmark. I am passionate runner since many years.

What do you enjoy about running in general and in particular running marathons?

The physical challenge, meeting new and old friends, setting goals for yourselves and any travelling to see the world.

How long have you been running and how many events (marathons) did you participate in, and where in the world?

My first marathon was in 1999, so far, I have finished more than 800 marathon and ultras. I have been running in 120 different countries.

What led you to run your first marathon? How did that go?

It was a goal I made for myself, to run a marathon before turning 30. I failed the year-goal, but the marathon-goal, I succeeded :). Very though, and could not walk properly for almost a week after.

What are your biggest achievements as a runner?

I think any race finished is an achievement in itself.

How do you train physically and mentally?

I train regularly every week, all year around, including the marathons that I run. The mental part should never be underestimated – over the year, I have learned to use the power of a positive mindset. Generally, I like to see things in a positive way.

Running injuries are quite common. What is your advice to prevent injuries?

I have faced different injuries over the years. Regular stretching and doing muscle training (i.e. core) have helped me to reduce this. Rather run one time less per week and use the time for stretching, than being injured.

Do you have a memorable running experience/ story that you would like to share with us?

Every race has its own story. The event itself, the people, the place, the experiences surrounding it, the travel, the nature etc.

What excites you to come visit Congo and run the 2023 Congo River Marathon?

I especially look forward to the sightseeings I will be doing, to experience the flavour of Congo. Congo will also be a new country for me, so look very much forward to meet the people here.

What is your goal for the race?

Having a wonderful time together with a lot of wonderful runners.
